Expansion of charging infrastructure through targeted grid support

Logo of BMWi

The ALigN project is part of the "Clean Air 2017-2020 Immediate Program", which promotes measures to improve air quality, primarily through the reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions in urban areas. A major goal of the program is to increase the willingness to switch from vehicles with combustion engines to electric vehicles by developing and expanding the charging infrastructure network for electric vehicles in line with requirements. ALigN is implementing this goal in Aachen with the construction of 475 public, semi-public and private charging stations. The project includes technical, economic and communication measures.

Our contribution

We examine the needs of the target groups that are relevant to acceptance and support the communicative support of the charging infrastructure expansion throughout all project phases. In the planning phase, the actors involved in the expansion, their roles and their needs in relation to the expansion of charging infrastructure as well as aspects that promote and inhibit acceptance are identified. The focus is on potential users of the charging infrastructure, especially municipal and commercial fleet operators. From the results, requirements and guidelines for the design of actor and role-specific communication and decision-making paths are derived. They describe when, how and about what the actors involved want to be informed and how they want to be involved in decisions. The guidelines are implemented during the development phase, checked for effectiveness with target group representatives and optimized if necessary.
